HiLo Clinical Trial Launch
On 22 September 2006 the HiLo trial will be launched in the UK across the
National Cancer Research Network. HiLo is a large (400 patients) randomised
trial of high versus low dose radioiodine, with or without rhTSH, in
patients with differentiated thyroid cancer. The trial is funded by Cancer
Research UK and is the only randomised study in thyroid cancer currently in
progress in the UK. The trial will determine whether (a) using a low
administered activity (1.1 GBq) is as effective in ablating thyroid remnants
as a high activity (3.7 GBq), and (b) using rhTSH just before ablation is
associated with a similar ablation success rate compared to patients who
discontinue thyroid hormone. It will also examine side effects and long-term
outcome, and undertake an economic evaluation.
All centres are invited to
participate.
